Tulsa conference Results

I just wanted to let everyone know what a great time we had in Tulsa attending the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association's annual conference. We are back, and our library has NEW CARPET! I have posted some information from the conference over on the Noteworthy Library Resources page, so be sure to check that out!

I know I should just rename my blog to DynaMed updates!!! Here is another one. You may have seen the link on the library page, but just in case you didn't here is a great opportunity for Arkansas physicians to use DynaMed. All you have to do is register at the website http://www.library.uams.edu/forms/dynamedregistration.asp . Click the link and fill out the information and someone will be in touch with a username and password. It is free, but users must be healthcare professionals in Arkansas and register on a yearly basis. This is a great resource, so be sure to take advantage of it!

Friday I will be attending a conference about Health Literacy. I am hoping it is a good one. The last class I attended was on the same topic and it was really great. Also, I am going to be doing a little bit of traveling, hoping to visit small hospitals and clinics in Arkansas to get info about the library out - should be fun!

Just finished a conference call about DynaMed and we will be able to share the wealth of knowledge with all Arkansas physicians in *hopefully* a matter of days. I'm excited about this and I'll be rolling around my counties trying to spread the word soon!

End of the year update

Well, we just ended our fiscal year at AHEC and there are a few announcements to make since my last post...
First, we have had some administrative changes with the resignation of AHEC SW's Director Bill McIntyre, PharmD. He's moved on to UT, so Pat Evans has stepped in as interim director. We will miss Dr. McIntyre, but the AHEC is all about making changes in the community so we also look forward to the new things that are sure to happen under Pat's direction.
We also recently held our graduation ceremony for our residents - they are finally on their own :) Congrats!!!! The ceremony went really well and pics can be found at www.flickr.com/destinync2002.
We are also still working on our big projects for DynaMed and there is a meeting this afternoon to discuss giving out passwords to physicians, so stay posted for that.
We also have recently added a lot of books to the collection, and will be adding some more for advanced nursing programs within a month or so.
One more thing to add is that I am officially recruiting for Reach Out and Read, a national program that provides books to children at well child programs. I am looking for volunteers to visit the waiting room and read to children as they wait for an appointment. For more information please contact the library!

Man, honestly, I have been horrible about getting on here and updating everyone! So just to catch everyone up to speed - here is what has been going on.
We have had a busy few months several AHEC employees have welcomed newcomers to their families, including our Outreach director! We also have seen the purchase of the old Wadley Regional Medical Center become official, and they are here to stay. There was a gala for our 3rd floor clinic that was a success. Just last week we had our annual Spring Fling for AHEC SW and I believe it was a big success. We had two great speakers, great food, and lots of fun. Also, we unfortunately are going to be losing our beloved AHEC SW Director to UT! We will certainly miss him dearly!
Next week May 4th we'll be hosting a demo of Nursing Reference Center for some of our nurses.
The Heart Walk is also coming up and we are sponsors of that, so i hope to see AHEC well represented there. we hosted last year and it was a real workout for those involved. We've been raising money for the last few months, and i thinke we've done well in that aspect. Hope it is a success!

Local News

Well, I guess it's almost official. One of our local hospitals that has had some trouble has found a buyer. That takes some of the worry off the medical community because we have been a two hospital town for as long as I can remember, and there was worry over such a big change.

Also, I met with the rep from DynaMed and we are gearing up to get some of our small hospitals to access the product. So, if there is anyone interested in getting it in their location, please give us a call and we'll try to work out some details.

And, it always seems like I post these closing dates with every blog post, but here are a few for January:
January 19 for MLK
We'll also be open that last Friday of the month when we're normally out.

Consumer Health Literacy & Closing Dates

Jennifer and I just got back from a short class about consumer health literacy. I knew there was a need out there, but it really does open your eyes to what patients miss when the literature isn't appealing or uses the wrong type of language. I've been working on some stuff to present to residents about the library and I definitely will add this to the schedule.
Another note - We've been closing early the last Friday of every month and it has worked out well. It is a great time for us to get caught up on all the hard searches or at least clear off our desks! Well, October will be a little different. One - we're having 2 behavioral medicine days, so it is possible that Friday October 3 will be another day that we close early because of that. Not sure at this point - and I'll try to update this, but call that day if you plan to stop by. Also on October 31 we'll be closing a bit earlier than usual, 12pm. Not too bad, but just putting that out there for anyone who plans on coming by.

Well, for all those students out there - please visit us if you need help with your book purchases and, when school starts, doing research. We are happy to train people to use the online resources and find items in the library.

Additions to Dynamed

Well, for anyone who uses the Dynamed product that we've been pushing there is more great news: its now available for mobil devices. Palms, Pocket PCs, Windows Smartphone, Blackberry, and iPhone are all devices that can be used to access the service. For more information just contact the library.

Also, just a quick note that we'll be closed Monday, May 26th for Memorial Day!

New Blog and Del.icio.us

Well, we are finally making some more technological advances! In the last couple years we have tried to increase efficiency by using more email for requests and document delivery. A recent MLA course on technology has given me that extra boost I need to update our website as well. I am hoping that the additions will make it more interactive for all our users.

The blog is a great way for us to get info to all our users about what's new in the library from books to policies, and also just put out some fun stuff or announcements.

Del.icio.us is an online favorites sharing site. I plan to use the AHECSW Librarian's Del.icio.us account to bring attention to websites that I have found useful. So far I have added some sites about searching and free health related info on the web. Some of those websites offer brochures or print outs that are great for physicians to have at the office.

I'll be posting as new things come along and the same goes for Del.icio.us, so check it often!
